Glory - A Story of African American Heroes in the Civil War
The movie “Glory” is one of my favorite Civil War movies.
Filmed near Fort Wagner, South Carolina, it covers several film genres and is a fitting tribute to African Americans in the military.Until this movie, there were few, if any movies that highlighted African Americans.Yes, it was always noted that the Civil War was fought, primarily for emancipation, but no movie had shown African American soldiers and their role in actual combat or support.
In addition to military and African American genres, this film is also a tribute to show how that we can overcome adversity, no matter what the odds.These soldiers, although never recognized, were true heroes to our country.If we did not highlight and honor them at that time, we can surely do it now.
African Americans were very eager to participate in the Civil War because they did not want to be under the persecution or “cause” of the Southern Confederates.They had personal motives for their lives, their family’s lives and the future of their descendents. Few other groups had so much to lose as did African Americans in the Civil War era.
Glory is about a unit of Union (Northern) African American soldiers who volunteered for services.Much of the film is based on the support of white units and without revealing too much of the plot of the film, they get to participate in their “glory” at the end of the movie.
This movie stars Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman. Denzel Washington won the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.
