Antipode Calculator - What is on the Other Side of the Earth?

Updated on September 16, 2013

If I Dig Through the Earth, Will I be in China?

As a child, I remember digging in my sandbox that my father had constructed for me. He would tell me, "if you keep digging, your going to dig through to China."

I always wondered what he was talking about and then I remembered seeing cartoons that showed people digging through the Earth and coming up in in front of a bunch of Asian people with pointy little hats on.

The Earth is a pretty amazing place and there are many things we don't know about it. One of them is the "antipode." The antipode is the exact opposite side of the Earth that you are. In this website, there is a calculator where you can put in your address and it will show you exactly where the other side of the Earth is.

If you are planning on digging through the Earth, there are some amazing facts that you should know before you begin.

Also, how fast are we going? In other words, did you know that we are spinning at speeds that you don't realize? Some are spinning faster than others. This site will also take you to a location where you can figure how fast you are really going.

This is intended to be a learning website with some fun in-between. Thanks for visiting and let me know what you think!

Some Theme Music for your Digging Pleasure - Fixing a Hole by the Beatles

Get "Fixing a Hole" Here! - On the "Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band" CD

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
This was the first Beatles album I ever had. It is a fantastic compilation of many of their hits and many silly songs that you will remember, once you hear them. Originally, I had this album in Mono (how boring) but it has been incredibly remastered into full stereo and is quite incredible. If you are looking for your first Beatles album or if you have never owned this one, I highly recommend it!

How Long to Dig to China?

3,185 Years

Well, considering that the Earth is 7926.28 miles in diameter, we need to figure this in feet. That amount of miles = just a little over 41,850,758 feet. The average digger (without modern machinery) can dug a 6 foot grave in about 4 hours. This being said it would take 27,900,505 hours or 1,162, 521 days. In other words, if you dug straight down, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and without and obstacles, it would take you just under 3,185 years. Despite that fact that all you will be buying a shovel, you may want to consider just flying there.

John Mellencamp

The Earth has an internal temperature of 13,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Please use a tempered shovel.

Spinning Out of Control

I'm Getting Dizzy!

Did you know that the Earth spins at a little less than 1,000 miles per hour at the equator and 0 miles per hour at the poles?

This is why space launches take place as close to the equator as possible to take advantage of the speed.

How Much Does the Earth Weigh?

The Earth is an estimated 6.6 sextillion tons.

If you love Kevin Bacon, which most people do, you will love this movie. This is not actually about Digging to China but is about a young girl who befriends a mentally challenged man. Instead of running away, she learns some life lessons through the relationship. This is a highly rated move and if you have never seen it, it is a "must see!"

"I kept on digging the hole deeper and deeper looking for the treasure chest until I finally lifted my head, looked up and realized that I had dug my own grave."
