Top Ten Best Classic Sci-Fi Body Parts Films

Updated on July 24, 2013

Let's Start with the Head and Work our Way Down

Being close to Halloween, people tend to look towards the macabre and things that are a little gory and unorthodox.

While many turn to Science Fiction, it might not be known that there is a close correlation between Sci-Fi and Horror genres on the good ol' Silver Screen.

This website, takes a twist and puts body parts in the highlight. While these may not be dismembered body parts that have been hacked off by a chain saw, they are movies that highlight body parts in the Science Fiction genre.

Most of these movies are classic but I have thrown in some more modern parts for those that have seen newer versions only. I remember seeing them when I was a child at the drive-in theater, either as a second or third feature. We were usually ready to fall asleep when these came on but I do remember seeing crawling hands and eyeballs

Starting from the head, I have chosen top classic movies and worked my way down to the legs. I have chosen movies particularly about those body parts and not all parts have a particular movie.

Please take your time and look around this site. You may find a part that you need. If you do, please leave a comment below.

Bodies of Science Fiction

The first Science Fiction movie was created in 1902 and was a silent film called, "A Trip to the Moon." This movie started a craze that has never stopped. It was long before anything that Ray Bradbury was to imagine and certainly, foretold the fact that man would someday step on the moon.

Interest swarmed around Sci-Fi serials on Saturday mornings at the theatre, such as "Buck Rogers." No, this isn't the type of cereal you eat and these were the way that past generations enjoyed themselves on a Saturday when there was no television.

The Sci-Fi movies evolved and actually turned into a "B" type movie. These are the movies I remember from the drive-in theater.

With the advent of these "B" movies, there was not only an interest in the alien world but the imaginations of the writers started to emphasize that Science Fiction could happen here on the Earth. Things started to get a little distorted and heads grew, people shrunk and eyeballs began to crawl. All of a sudden there was more of an interest on earthly things and especially our bodies, and what could happen to them.

While the severed limb of Horror movies was scary, they usually didn't crawl around on their own. The unexplained science of this occurring was known only to Science Fiction and these weren't always the result of alien forces.

Today, movies teeter on genre borders and I will mention examples below of Science Fiction Horror and Science Fiction Fantasy. These newer genres distort reality even more.

Have fun and participate. If you have seen the movies, please comment. I certainly remember some of them.

The Incredible Two-Headed Transplant/The Thing With Two Heads (1972)

The Incredible Two-Headed Transplant / The Thing with Two Heads (Midnite Movies Double Feature)
What could be better than a double-feature of two-headed movies? That's like four total heads! This collection combines two classic two-headed Sci Fi movies into one package. I remember both of these flicks and although neither are my favorite body part movies, I enjoyed them. Shout it out, "Two for the price of one!"

Horror vs. Science Fiction

Science Fiction and Horror Films have been closely related to each other since their earliest beginning of film.

Many films can be labeled as "Science Fiction Horror" and the best-known examples are "Frankenstein" and "Alien."

The Evil Brain from Outer Space (1964)

You can't have a Sci-Fi body part extravaganza without a brain movie. This one is the ultimate brain movie. Although newer movies have been made like "The Man with Two Brains," you can't beat this classic early brain movie. Watch this one with a friend so your brain doesn't get sucked into the television.

Drive-In Discs, Vol. 1: Screaming Skull/The Giant Leeches [DVD]
The "Screaming Skull" is a classic of early Science Fiction "B" movies. I remember this one from the old drive-in days. I was in the back seat hiding under a blanket. This one is packaged with another classic, "The Giant Leeches" and although it isn't a body part movie, it is a bonus for those nights when these types of movies are on your entertainment agenda.

The Unknown

Most of the early Science Fiction movies dealt with aliens from the unknown abyss of outer space where our imagination could run amuck!

The more modern Sci-Fi "unknown" has been extended right here on earth with movies that explore the earth's center, the ocean deep and unknown dimensions.

The Crawling Eye (1958)

The Crawling Eye (Widescreen European Edition)
This is one of my favorite Sci-Fi body parts movies! There is nothing like laying on the floor with an eyeball creeping it's way towards you like a over-easy egg. Classic 1950's drive-in movie. Still a little creepy although it looks cheese compared to some of today's special effects.

The Telltale Heart (1962)

The Tell-Tale Heart [DVD]
This is a total classic in Science Fiction and borders on Horror. This movie was based on the original story by Edgar Allen Poe and although it has been remade several times, I still think this one from the early 1960's is the best. This one is fun to enjoy with a group of people.

Torso (1973)

While this one is not purely Sci-Fi, it does deal with the imagination and a twisted one at that. A scary movie, it still holds up today as one of the classics of all time.

Distortion

Many Science Fiction films are what we might call "distorted reality."

I can remember films when I was younger such as giant spiders, eyeballs and also the classic, "The Incredible Shrinking Man." Most early alien movies depicted a creature that was a distortion of the human figure.

The Lost Skeleton Returns Again (2009)

This is for some of the more modern fans of Science Fiction body parts. If you liked Indiana Jones, you will probably like this one. It deals with skulls and things buried deep in the Amazon. However, be very careful what you dig up.

Science Fiction and Fantasy

A modern theory on Science Fiction is that it tries to get us to actually believe the images and what is happening, while in a fantasy film, you suspend your belief since you know most of it can't be true.

With movies like "Tron" and "Avatar," Sci Fi and Fantasy have been combined.

The Crawling Hand (1963)

Moving on to the hands, this is another creepy classic. In my opinion, I put this one right up there with the crawling eyeball. I have seen this type of thing done in some movies but this is the only movie that is totally about a creepy, crawling hand!

The Beast with Five Fingers (1946)

Starring Peter Lorre, this is a classic very early Sci-Fi film. The movie leaves a little to be desired but Lorre definitely makes this one worth watching. I believe I first saw this one on late night television with Elvira. A must-see classic!

Eight Legged Freaks (2002)

I thought there was a movie out there about a living dismembered leg but it must've been part of another movie that I had seen at one time. This isn't about human legs, but what could be scarier than the eight legs of a spider...or many of them. This one is not for those who have a fear of spiders, it will keep you up all night with the fly swatter and can of Raid.
