I Was a Teenage Cowpunk Rocker; Well, Sort of.

Updated on August 24, 2013

My Strange Taste in "Cowpunk" and Other Fusion Music

I discovered Cowpunk music a few years ago. Although I didn't know what it was, I was soon to learn that it was another form of fusion music.

I love Fusion, however I also like the basic styles. You can look at music like basic colors that you can mix and create something wonderful.

This website has information on Cowpunk and other Fusion style music although you will see my taste in all music throughout. The images I selected reflect my taste and also sense of humor. Images, including thumbnails are from the Public domain and if not cited, they are from my personal collection.

As my Mother used to say when I was going to school, "Have fun and learn things." I have tried to make this little journey enjoyable for the music lover.

My Taste in Fusion Music, Strange as it May Be.

Let's just say that I am extremely eclectic

I am a fan of fusion music and although Cowpunk is virtually a new addition to my library, I have enjoyed most of it.

In the 1970's, I became a fan of Punk Music. Not because it was rebellious, but I enjoyed the different sounds and the oddity of it.

Everyone enjoys something different and although the singer was not always in tune, the hard beat and the sound was particularly enticing to me.

Yes, most of the time you could look at Punk Music and say, "that person has not singing talent" but I have to say that there are many singers, in my opinion who have little or no talent but they still have a following. Some that I can think of are Bob Dylan, Bob "the Bear" Hite from Canned Heat and Eminem, to name a few.

What compounded the strangeness of my eclectic musical taste was that I was raised on old Country Music. My Father played it while I was growing up and it is very nostalgic to me.

When I was at work, I would have music on in my office and my mixes would include Punk, Country, easy listening (c'mon, it is soothing), Rock, Southern Rock, Opera and Pop. Many times during my career, people would pop into my office and ask me what I was listening to and then the song would end and a raucous Punk song would come on. Most of the time, that was their cue to leave.

I am still very eclectic and enjoy the way that people express themselves with different types of music.

Cowpunking? Isn't that Harmful to Animals and Against the Law

Well, a person who loves Cowpunk is not a person who gets drunk and goes out and tips cows. Cowpunk music is a form of fusion music and there are many different kinds that I will show below.

Cowpunking goes by several names that also include Punktry and Country Punk. It is a combination that can be inverted. No, I don't mean that it can be turned upside-down. The inversion is that Cowpunk music can either be Punk Lyrics played with a Country Music Beat or Country Music played with a Punk Music Beat.

It all started in the early 1980's when a bunch of youngsters (I was younger then), started listening to old Country Music Albums and then putting different beats to them.

I particularly like the Punk Rock lyrics to Country Music style. Not only are Punk lyrics used, but regular rock music as well. "Luther Wright and the Wrongs" did several Pink Floyd songs including "Hey You" and "Comfortably Numb." Now, when I was a country boy growing up, the only way to be comfortably numb was to empty one of Dad's beers from the back of the "fridge, hoping he never noticed."

If you give it a try, you might like it. Now, let's listen to some Luther Wright and you will hear what I am talking about.

Luther Wright and the Wrongs - The Wall, Part I - Punk Grass Music - Very Interesting!

You've Heard One Song, Here is the Whole Album

Rebuild the Wall Pt. 1

Luther Wright is definitely not wrong. Although this is not Cowpunk, it is a fusion of Bluegrass and the smooth melodic melodies of Pink Floyd. How much different can you get? I have this on my MP3 player, it is definitely one you will enjoy. With Amazon, you can also preview before buying as they have snippets of the songs. Enjoy this as I do. Wonderful mix

Who Enjoys Cowpunking?

Cowpunk Music has been around for over thirty years. It is hard to believe but it's true. I slowed down my listening and collecting of music in the late 1970's so I didn't realize that it even existed until about 5 years ago.

It has a huge following on Twitter and Facebook. If you do any types of searches, you will discover all types of Cowpunk Music.

Many of the original artists have progressed into other styles but it still exists and is very popular. Since it started in the U.S.A. in Los Angeles, California in the early 1980's, it has spread to Europe and other parts of the world.

Cowpunk Music can have some harsh lyrics since some were originally punk, so you need to ensure that you don't let your children listen to them unless you screen them first. Most that I have seen have labels that mark that the labels are explicit.
