Nursing Home Gifts that Mom Will Appreciate

Updated on September 4, 2013

Gifts for Your Mom or Someone Else's Mom in a Nursing Home

My Mother passed away in 1999 and she was in a nursing home. I do miss my mother dearly.

In honor of her, I would like to dedicate this website to her. She was a very loving but very simple Mother. Not simple in mind, but simple in that she would always rather do things for others instead of herself. She was a giving person, to say the least.

My Mother loved appreciated the little things in life. As you get older, expensive items or gadgets do not mean much to you. The little creature comforts that you enjoyed most of your life is what you gravitate back towards. This website is about the little things that I remember about my Mother and what she loved. In her last Mother's Day, I can remember sending her these little creature comforts.

If you are unsure what to buy your mother or anyone in a nursing home, always consider the simple stuff. Many of the nursing homes do not provide all of these items and these will make someone very happy.

Merry Christmas to all of the Moms out there, especially those in the sunset of their lives!

My Mother loved these booties. These are one of the things that most elderly enjoy. They keep their feet warm and also have grips on the bottom so they don't slip when they walk. This is a good deal for a set of these.

Where Did the Term "Creature Comforts" Originate?

It is believed that the term "Creature Comforts" originated in 1610-1630 . Some say that the original origin of creature was from 1 Timothy IV 4 which says that "For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving."

The word "created" in translation also refers to "creature" and "thing created." The word "create" has origins in "creatus" which is defined as "anything that ministers to man's comforts."

Based on all this, the meaning of the term "Creature comforts" is traced back to the 1630's and was a humorous view of man's use of whiskey but the use of has continued to this day.

My Mother enjoyed hard candy so much that we always brought it with us when visiting. She liked the different flavors and especially loved lemon and butterscotch. One of her other favorites was black licorice, she used to call the little black ones with crosses on them "JuJu's."

Slippers are necessary. My Mother loved Isotoner and these look very similar to what she used to wear. They were slip-resistant and very soft and comfy. Seeing my Mother in bare feet almost never occurred.

Sugary Snacks In Nursing Homes

Some people think that giving sugary snacks to residents in nursing homes should not be allowed while others think that they should get them. What do you think?

Robes are always a must. My Mother was always cold and she always wore a robe. She liked the long ones better but this is a very comfy one made by Dearfoam. I have been in other nursing homes, the temperatue can be cold and uncomfortable to residents sometimes, making a nice soft robe a necessary item.

My Mother always had dry skin and requested lotion. A type of lotion that is also good for the nails is a plus. This one comes from Amazon in a three pack so you can hold a couple back and replenish when you run out.
