I had a Brat for Lunch

Updated on October 22, 2013

A Bratwurst, that Is

No, I do not eat puppy dogs in buns, but I do love Bratwurst dogs or as most people know them, "Brats."

My first encounter with a brat occurred at a Cincinnati Reds baseball game. When with my Father, I ordered one and I was hooked. Although most Brats are a dirty white in color, they do make them darker in color. The color is dependent upon the meat in the bratwurst.

Being stationed in Germany in the 1980s, I really obtained a cultural connection with the bratwurst. If you ever go to Germany, be sure to get a bratwurst there; there are none others that compare in taste.

Today, I eat a lot of brats. I usually eat two but because of calories, I have cut down to a brat per slice of bread. You can fold the bread around the bread and it makes a bun. Some people like the harder brochen (German hard rolls) but I prefer the softer bread as you get more taste from the brat.

I have tried to make this a fun site and it has several things that might give you a chuckle. Please enjoy yourself on this lunchtime journey.

Baseball, Germany and Brats

A Bratwurst or Brat is of German origin. It can be made of different meat including veal and beef, but the brats that I have eaten are usually made of mostly pork.

Brats are chopped meat and formed into a sausage form. In fact, the name Bratwurst was really the way the sausages were made, not the name of the sausage.

When made in Germany, they are mostly pan friend and many times cooked in beer. If you have heard of the Beer Brat, cooking them in beer is where the term originated.

The German people don’t consider the Bratwurst a meal. They normally eat them as snacks and the favorite condiment is hot mustard.

I buy brats in the grocery store every time I shop and they have become my favorite lunch item. They are quick and easy to make and are delicious. I believe they even make vegetarian brats now.

My love of the brat originated at a baseball game, continued when I was stationed in Germany during my military career and now, brats always inhabit my refrigerator.

I hope you like this website and I always appreciate comments.
