Garden Gnomes and Leprechauns

Updated on July 2, 2013

Both Gnomes and Leprechauns are Popular Garden Fixtures.

Garden Gnomes and Garden Leprechauns grace gardens around the world and have a colorful history which can be described as green and also as colorful as the rainbow that leads to the pot of gold.

Helping in German gardens since their first manufacture in 1841 in Dresden, Germany, Garden Gnomes have been popular. Small wooden dwarfs that were placed in homes started in the 17th Century but the porcelain ones were said to have started in Germany.

The Gnomes became popular in the rest of the world during World War II. Soldiers brought them back as prizes to their home countries and thus they have been around in the USA since the 1940's

The Leprechaun has been around in one form or another for 2,500 years. There is no claim of when Leprechaun figures started being made but their depictions have been around for hundreds of years.

While both are popular, it is interesting that they are similar and also different but both an important part of culture and mythology.

Please enjoy this site and take time to purchase a little guy or two. They make fabulous gifts, just don't sit on their pointed hats!

Gnomes and Leprechauns

What's the Dif?

Leprechauns and Gnomes are both mythical creatures, neither ever did or do exist. Leprechauns were supposedly from the Irish Islands and they were similar to fairies. Gnomes, on the other hand, inhabited Europe and lived in the dark. Supposedly, if they stepped into the light, they turned into stone. Thus, the Garden Gnomes we see today could probably be explained that way.

Gnomes and Leprechauns are supposedly very similar mythological creatures. While there are garden Gnomes, some people regard them as Leprechauns. Both guard treasures, Gnomes take theirs underground while the Leprechauns flee with a pot of gold. Either way, they are fun little creatures and many collect them.
