Easter and the Resurrection of Jesus Christ in Art

Updated on July 2, 2013

The Reason for the Season Through the Eyes of the Masters

Growing up, I went to a Catholic Church and saw the different paintings, stained glass windows and icons in the church. I was always mesmerized by this beautiful art and the painstaking time that it took to create it.

While little, I learned all about Jesus Christ , his suffering and ultimate resurrection to save us from death.

This website commemorates my early recollection of Christian art which I think is beautiful all by itself. As a genre, there have been few subjects that come even close to the volume of art that has been created to tell the story of Jesus Christ.

Please take some time to peruse this site, take some quizzes and have a little fun. You might even learn something! If you would like to know more about Jesus, message me, I will be glad to tell you all that I know!

Early Christian Art and the Resurrection

Easter is my favorite Holiday. It is much more than bunny rabbits, colored eggs, Peeps or chocolate candy.

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is central to the Christian faith. Without the resurrection, Christ would've been like any other prophet who claimed that they were the way.

It was not explained in detail in the Gospels but has been depicted in art throughout the ages. Based on various different artistic interpretations, we can get a pretty good idea of how it actually occurred.

In the first few centuries after the crucifixion and resurrection, Christians were persecuted heavily. Any artwork related to these historical events had to remain hidden and most were "underground", literally, and kept in the catacombs of Rome.

In the next few centuries, these depictions increased and spread. Illustrations included paintings, stained glass, sculpture and other medium.

Please take some time to browse through the gallery below. I have chosen some of the most diverse and ornate depictions that still exist today

Passion of the Christ DVD - The only movie to watch on Easter

The Passion of the Christ (Full Screen Edition)
The Passion of the Christ (Full Screen Edition)
The first time I saw this movie, I really didn't know what to expect other than knowing the story of Christ. It is truly a magnificent creation and I am sure brought many to Jesus. I was saddened that it didn't even get consideration for the Academy Award that year. Mel Gibson has done a spectacular job on this film. If you have never seen it, it is a must and it should be watched on Easter to get the real meaning out over the Easter Bunny.

The Passion Of The Christ - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
As in the movie of the same name, this soundtrack is dramatic and is like no other. It would be hard to see the movie without the soundtrack as it does add emphasis in the form of a musical exclamation point! If you like classical music or are just a little eclectic like I am, you need to own this. It is great music to work out to or to be playing while you're praying!
