The Port Lincoln South Australia Tunarama Festival
Held during the Annual Australia Day Weekend Celebration - January 24-27, 2014
In my travels and experiences, one of the most interesting events I have ever heard of is Tunarama. It is held in Port Lincoln South Australia during the Australia Days annual January celebrations.
Tunarama is an event celebrating one of our favorite aquatic friends, the tuna.
A tuna is a huge fish and most don't realize that they can weigh 1,000 pounds or more. With this in mind, tuna fishing is a very difficult job. The celebration of Tunarama was created to commemorate the beginning of the tuna fishing season and to wish the seafaring fisherman well.
The most interesting part of the festival is the tossing of tuna by individuals in a wacky competition.

Tunarama and the Tuna Toss Competition
Tunarama has been held as part of the Australia Day Celebration in Port Lincoln South Australia since 1962.
Tuna fishing was a new industry in Port Lincoln and the Tunarama was originally held to commemorate the beginning of the tuna season. After the celebration was over, the tuna fleets headed out to sea.
Part of the Tunarama festivities is the annual Tuna Toss competition. During this event, individuals compete to see how far they can throw a tuna. They wind up and sling the tuna, much like a discuss thrower in the Olympics and let the tuna fly. If you watch some of the videos on this site, you will get the idea.
It is not considered wasteful because the tuna that are used are inedible for different reasons.
There are other events including a parade, games and family fun and they also crown Miss Tunarama.
You have probably never seen anything quite like this anywhere else.
