The Weeki Wachee Mermaids
Mermaid Shows at Weeki Wachee State Park
Mermaids? Are you kidding me? Are they for real? That's what I thought as a little boy. This was long before Ariel won her prince in the Little Mermaid and before I learned of Sea Sirens in the craggy coves of the Rhine River in German that lured the sailors into their rocks with their beautiful voices.
Weeki Wachi began in 1947 and the mermaid shows there have become legendary. If you have not visited, I encourage you to go. They not only have shows with current mermaids, the park is full of nostalgia and if you bring your swimming suit, you may just end up swimming with the manatees in the warm natural spring waters.
Anyway you look at it, it is a fun experience that you will never forget! C'mon in and don't splash the others while visiting. You will definitely learn something and may want to leave your own mark in the sand! Just don't get sand in the car, please.

Have You Ever Seen A Mermaid?
I recently made a Summer trip to Florida and while looking on the map, I noticed a very nostalgic place. It is called Weeki Wachie.
It may not be nostalgic to you, but when I was very little, we went here on one of our annual treks to Florida to visit my Grandparents. They had a trailer in Florida and we would go down to visit during Summer vacation. They would come up to Ohio later in the Summer and live there while the weather was nice. Then during the late Fall, they would travel to Florida again.
Today, people visit Arizona in the winter also as they used to visit Florida. We call them "Winter Visitors," or "Snow Birds," but that is another story.
I was a mere 4 or 5 years old in the early 1960's. While Weeki Wachee had already existed since 1947, it was still in its very early stages of development. My sister and I both went there with our parents, not knowing what to expect. We were amazed at the swimming mermaids and the shows that were put on there. I remember riding the Weeki Wachee river cruise and the glass bottom boat.
I have visited Weeki Wachee again and it was quite a nostalgic trip. The State of Florida had taken over the park a few years ago and I was not sure if it was abandoned or not, but they have done a good job in bringing it back up to standards.
But, we are not here for my nostalgic trip down memory lane; we are here for the mermaids. They still perform and while the crowds were very small, they did an excellent job and it was very fun to see.
This website chronicles their photo and video history and also has photos from my visit and most of the photos were taken by me unless otherwise noted.
I hope you have fun. Please make sure to leave your comments about Weeki Wachee and if any of you visited after I did in the mid 60's, I would love to hear from you. If you visited before the mid 1960's, I would especially love to hear from you. I may put your commentary into a section of this site.
Thanks for visiting!
